Bonn physics show visiting the Cluster of Excellence, Bonn, Dortmund and Siegen
Bonn

The Physics Show of the University of Bonn will tour with its new show “Zukunftsenergien – Zukunftmusik?” in November and December, including visits to their CmF colleagues in Dortmund and Siegen. The physics musical revolves around fundamental questions of the energy transition such as the working principle of heat pumps and the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen and nuclear fusion.
First shows will be performed at the University of Bonn on October 25-26 and November 16. Afterwards, the show will visit the TU Dortmund University as a part of the Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia programme, an outreach format offering talks and shows conveying physical concepts to a general audience enjoying breakfast, on November 29, 2025. Additionally, two shows will be performed at the University of Siegen on December 13, 2025, among performances at further universities.
More information on tickets will be available here.
Quantum computing lecture course for interested pupils, Siegen
Emmy Noether Campus ENC-D-114, Siegen (Walter-Flex-Straße 3, 57072 Siegen)

In the approaching winter semester, the Mittwochsakademie will return at the University of Siegen. The format is directed towards everyone interested in physics and will cover the aspects of quantum computing this year. The lectures will be given by Prof. Dr. Alex Lenz and start on November 19, 2025. More details can be found here.
New iteration of Physik im Apollo, Siegen
Apollo Theater Siegen (Morleystr. 1, 57072 Siegen)

Physik im Apollo goes into its third round! The event aims to give an explanation of quantum computing through music and acrobatics has been sold out in the past two years and will return to the Apollo Theater in Siegen in late November of this year. To reach a broader audience, three performances are scheduled this year, which will feature a talk by Prof. Dr. Lena Funcke from the University of Bonn in addition to the artistic contributions.
More information be found and tickets can be obtained here.
Projects

Outreach group: Subatomic Heroes. Siegen
To attract already young pupils we started recently an Instagram channel, where we report about the life of our researchers, ranging from master students to senior professors.
To find out more about the research topics covered by the Subatomic Heroes you can also have a look at our brochure.

Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia. Dortmund
Public lectures about a wide range of physics reasearch fields. The lecture series "Between Bread Rolls and Borussia" offers weekly presentations on diverse physics topics for the general public, specifically targeting adults, children, and teenagers. Delivered by experts from the TU Dortmund environment, the lectures take place every Saturday at 10:30 AM in Lecture Hall II. A special show commemorating the 20th anniversary is planned for January 27, 2024, at the Dortmunder U. For those who can't attend in person, a live stream is provided. Additionally, there's an online quiz for students, with special certificates awarded to the participants.

Netzwerk Teilchenwelt Masterclasses. Bonn, Dortmund, Siegen
In the master classes, students experience how the physics of the smallest particles is explored. The focus is on analyzing data from the large-scale experiments. In this way, the young people can carry out their own hands-on activities, gain specialist insights and learn about the importance of basic research.

Explaining physics with acrobatics. Siegen
Have you ever wondered about what distinguishes a Qubit in quantum computing from a bit in your computer? In Siegen, that and other physics topics are frequently explained using acrobatics, as presented for example in the videos below.

Machine Learning Masterclass. Bonn
Facing unprecedented amounts of data, modern methods of data analysis are more relevant than ever in particle physics. To convey the concepts of machine learning techniques and the challenges and opportunities they bring to interested high school students is the goal of a dedicated machine learning Masterclass of the Netzwerk Teilchenwelt. The programme is presented by young scientists of the University of Bonn in collaboration with the exhibition on artificial intelligence of the Deutsches Museum Bonn and revolves around the usage of neural networks to measure decay widths of different decays of Z bosons with data recorded by the OPAL experiment.
More information on the Masterclasses can be found on the website of the Deutsches Museum and an overview of the programme is provided by the University of Bonn under this link.

Physics Show. Bonn
With our events, we aim to inspire everyone, from children to adults, with physics. Our shows feature educational and fun physics experiments, understandable for ages 12 to 99. Younger guests also enjoy them. Prof. Herbert Dreiner and Michael Kortmann from the University of Bonn lead the physics show, with dedicated physics students assisting in their free time.
The show was awarded the 2009 European Physical Society High Energy Physics Outreach Prize.

Rent A Prof. Siegen
The "Rent a Prof" programme offers lectures to schools, where topics of current physics research are presented. With that we provide a glimpse into science as well as in the academic and research environment at universities. In particular in primary schools and in the early years of secondary school interest for these activities turns out to be balanced among different genders. We started these events in Siegen and plan to extend them to Bonn, Jülich and Dortmund.
